Adjustment

Adjustment may include coping with such events/stressors as geographical moves, relationship changes, marriage, divorce, births, job transitions, etc. Therapy targeting healthy adjustment involves developing coping skills, changing thought processes or understanding how adjustment fits into your life.

Anxiety

Anxiety is an adaptive emotion. While healthy levels of anxiety play an essential role in our lives, hurtful levels of anxiety can cause headaches, stomachaches, inattention, fear of negative evaluation by others, etc. Therapy in these cases focuses on creating problem solving strategies to reduce anxiety and thereby resolve anxiety related symptoms.

ADHD

ADHD represents a difficulty adapting attention and behavior patterns to situations at hand. Therapy focuses on first understanding ADHD and then implementing strategies to manage attention and behavior processes.

Depression

Depression may include problems with sleep or appetite, feeling tired, glass-half-empty thinking, irritability, angry or sad feelings and/or withdrawal from friends or activities. For children, therapy includes identifying what the “sad/mad brain” is thinking and modifying those thoughts. For adults, therapy involves identifying negative thoughts/triggers and using strategies to change thoughts, feelings and/or behaviors.

Parent Consultation

Parent consultation focuses on helping parents understand if their child’s problems are uncommon for their age. If a child is out of step with his or her peers, we’ll discuss next steps or how to encourage change through environmental or parenting adaptations.

Stress

Stress is a physical, emotional, or cognitive response to pressures, events, or relationships. While helpful as a motivator, stress can lead to negative outcomes when overwhelming or improperly managed. Therapy helps create problem solving approaches to reduce stressors or strengthen coping skills.
